That Wake-Up Call You hear Tomorrow Morning?
Darling, It’s Not the Ritz
This stunning debut novel is the story of an embattled family and the mother who tries to keep them together. In her case, from the afterlife.
It begins when Sandy Lazarus, a deceased wife and mother, decides that she’s had it with decades-long family feuds. How can she rest in eternal peace if she doesn’t step in and problem solve? Trouble is, divine intervention is a big no-no. Instead of making things better, Sandy makes things worse. Or maybe not.
A near-fatal accident back home forces Shelby, her 38-year old, single-as-a- sock-in-the-dryer daughter, to return home to Long Island. Faster than you can say family dysfunction, a wild chain of events forces her eldest to confront old demons…her mother’s untimely death, her father’s remarriage to her mother’s younger sister, her own younger sister’s meshugina behavior, and the terrible void caused by the disappearance of Matthew Lieberman, her childhood love.
But Shelby faces her biggest life crisis after discovering that her younger sister, Lauren, is a DES daughter, and in need of surrogate mother. Up until now, Shelby wouldn’t consider lending anyone her designer shoes, let alone her uterus. But the more Shelby learns about DES, the harder it is to let Lauren face this struggle alone.
A LITTLE HELP FROM ABOVE explores the enduring link between mothers, daughters, and sisters, and asks the age-old question: who are the people in my life and what was God thinking when he put us together? It is a poignant, entertaining and emotional roller coaster ride that stops exactly where it’s supposed to. Home sweet home.

After I read ” A Little Help from Above ” I loved it and sent you a note. You were sweet enough to reply and I felt like I had been contacted by a movie star. “Hi. I currently I live in Belgium. Last June I went to Boston for a conference and found your book A Little Help From Above. I enjoyed it a lot. When I was a kid I was used to believe with all my heart that my father who passed when I was five could hear me. By reading your book, I felt like the little girl who hopes for a little help from above. Your novel encourages people to keep hope that god has a plan for everyone.” – Greetings from Ana Rivpinan
From Amazon Reviewers:
Excellent book….heartwarming, thought-provoking and hilariously funny by love to read “I L J” “I enjoyed this book more than I have any other in quite some time! The author is extremely talented and very funny! I could not put it down, but as I got close to finishing, I didn’t want it to end. I loved the characters as well as the storylines. For any reviewer who “didn’t get it”, I have to believe that you are lacking in the sense of humor category! Some of you sound like Shelby, the one who supposedly offended you so much! Get a grip, Guys; it’s a NOVEL! For those of you who are open-minded and can appreciate a great story that is well-written and quite witty, GET IT AND ENJOY IT! I sure did!
A wild and wacky story that was fun to read! By Donna K. “bookcrosser” (Long Island, NY)
“Very witty and cleverly crafted, this is a gallant first effort by the author! It’s a story of a long journey on the path of reconciliation, which takes many zany (and sometimes silly) twists and turns. The reflections of the long-dead Sandy, who is trying to manipulate her family’s outcome from above, is somewhat reminiscent of Debbie Macomber’s angels series (I make this comparison as a complement to the author). As a Long Islander, I appreciated accurate representation of this area contained in the setting and in the references to actual real-life places scattered throughout. While there were parts that were a bit unrealistic, such as the chance meeting on the Hutchinson Parkway, the surrogate storyline, and the astrology bits, all-in-all, this was a highly enjoyable story that was lots of fun to read!”
by “chyron24” “An awesome book, by a very talented first-time author. LOVED IT, LOVED IT. The premise: that a mother’s work is never done, even from the “other side”. In this case, Shelby Lazarus lost her mom 30 years ago, and unbeknownst to Shelby, her mom has been “assisting her” and pulling some supernatural strings from above. Saralee Rosenberg has such a way with words, it is delightful to read her witty first creation. Her character development is wonderful. Furthermore, she deals with many timely issues, such as DES, surrogate pregnancy, family squabbles, sister competition, destiny, karma and astrology. A must read for every female on the planet, regardless of age or status. So enjoyable and thought provoking. Thank you to this talanted authoress. Looking forward to reading her two latest books. And to you Ms. Rosenberg, please keep writing a book a year, so I can savor every word! Perhaps a sequel to this entitled “A Little MORE Help from Above”?” Arlene Millman
by victoriasecpink “Victoriasecpink” “WOW! I absolutely adored this book.. The twists and turns kept me up half the night not being able to put it down. I have officially read this book about twelve times. Sad? No, not really. Read this book and you will completely understand. I have even gotten my girlfriends to read it and now they are hooked too! For a first book, Ms. Rosenberg deserves a HUGE standing ovation. I would suggest this book to any female, young or old (although not under like 15)… it is a great, easy, enjoyable read that constantly throws you off. You fall in love with all the characters (even Shelby, the not so friendly one!) You get a sense of why she is the way she is. You can see how she is still grieving from the loss of her mother, and the resentment she has for her “new mom”..a.k.a her aunt. Shelby learns a lot from her coming to terms with her problems, and really shows how a pretty bad situation can turn into a blessing from God….or was it because she had a Little Help From Above?”
Sharon Dothan “grumpy” “I read this book in 2 days, almost 6 months ago, and I’m still thinking about it. Love it, love it, love it.
The best! By barbear (New York NY) “Love the book and author very funny. True to life. Did l say that l love love the book? Yes l do.”
Bring on the tissues! By julz “skyjulz” “I lost my mother a year ago. I picked this up and debated on whether or not I actually could read it. It was great. I was so engrossed. I sat and cried for an hour after I finished it. Yes it made me sad, but it also made me hopeful that my mom is out there watching over me as well. I sent a copy to my sister!”
Still Smiling By “jayne500” (Los Angeles, CA) “I had so much fun reading this book that I couldn’t put it down. I woke up early in the morning (before work) just to have time to read. It was a really quick read that conjured emotions from me. Some parts I liked so much I read twice. Being a Jewish girl, from the same area of the globe, who also lost a parent, and who also moved away from her family — I could relate to several aspects of this book. The late mom’s connection with her family was how I imagine my deceased dad affects my own family. The book made me happy and for that simple reason I look forward to Saralee’s next book.
Must Read!!! By A Customer Where has this author been for so long? This is a great book that you don’t want to put down until you finish reading it!! Saralee Rosenberg does an excellent job with her writing ability. It is a must read for everyone. I can’t wait for her next book!!
A MUST READ” By Robin Monson (Providence, RI) “I could not put this book down until I finished!! I can’t wait until the next book comes out from Saralee Rosenberg easy reading kept me laughing, crying, and also rethink the way I treat my baby sister!! I truly identified with Shelby. I have given a copy to all I know and love!!
Could be the next “My Big Fat Greek Wedding!”By A Customer “Saralee Rosenberg’s character development and story line are so vivid that I would love to see Shelby and Lauren come to life on the big screen. Mothers, sisters, and daughters everywhere…if you’re looking for a book that promises to make you smile and laugh out loud, this book is for you. But don’t let its whimsical nature fool you. Ms Rosenberg’s sharp and honest wit keeps you thinking about a mother’s work and how it’s never done.”
